PARIS: Vivendi said Thursday that it had agreed to buy a 29.5 percent stake of the telecommunications operator Neuf Cegetel, giving it a controlling interest and creating a major force in an already hypercompetitive French broadband market.

Vivendi said that its mobile phone arm, SFR, had reached a preliminary deal to acquire the stake that is owned by the commodity trading group Louis Dreyfus for €34.50 a share. SFR already holds 40.5 percent of Neuf Cegetel.

Vivendi said SFR would then offer €36.50 a share for the outstanding shares in Neuf Cegetel.

If the deal, worth almost €5 billion, or $7.2 billion, is completed, it would create an integrated telecommunications provider in France on a scale to rival the dominant player in the country, France Télécom.

The deal comes as telecommunications companies are delivering more products over broadband.

SAN FRANCISCO: Buoyed by its heavy international presence, Hewlett-Packard appears to have sidestepped the softening demand from corporations inside the United States for new technology.

In recent weeks, companies including Cisco, International Business Machines and Network Appliances have warned that U.S. corporations are tightening their technology spending. But on Monday, Hewlett-Packard, the world's largest technology company, not only reported strong fourth quarter net profit and sales but also predicted further growth in the months ahead.

During conference calls with reporters and industry analysts, Mark Hurd, the chief executive, declined to answer directly whether HP was seeing a softening in demand among corporate customers in the United States.
